Kenneth J. Pia, Jr., CPA, ABV, ASA, CBA has been appointed to Quinnipiac University's Entrepreneurship Program Advisory Committee. On October 22, 2010, Kenneth J. Pia, Jr., CPA, ABV, ASA, CBA was a speaker at the New England Chapter of the ESOP Association's Annual Fall Conference in Cromwell, CT on the topic of ESOP accounting. John M. DelGrego, CPA, ASA, CVA was named to the Ronald McDonald House of Connecticut's Board of Directors. Meyers, Harrison & Pia, LLC has been voted the Best Valuation Firm in the Connecticut Law Tribune Readers' Poll for the sixth year in a row. On September 20, 2010, Kenneth J. Pia, Jr., CPA, ABV, ASA, CBA spoke to a group of bankers in Stamford, CT on "The ABCs of ESOPs: A Tax-Favored Strategy for Business Owners." On September 13 and 14, 2010, Mark I. Harrison, CPA, ABV, CFF, Esq. was a speaker at the BVR/Morningstar 3rd Annual Summit on Business Valuation in Divorce in Chicago, IL. He presented on three topics: Properly Implementing the Bernier Methodology in Valuing Pass-Through Entities; Premarital Business Appreciation: Apportioning Active vs. Passive Appreciation; and Electronic Discovery: Drafts, Notes, Emails, Texts and How to Do it Right. The Summit on Business Valuation in Divorce is the premier conference for lawyers, judges, and business appraisers who are active in this complex, risky, and lucrative area of business valuation. Young, MST participated in the Connecticut Society of Certified Public Accountants' Kickin' 4 Kids' Charity Kickball Tournament held by the organization's New and Young Professional's Group in Plainville, CT. Also in August, David J. Peer, AM, MBA volunteered for the Special Olympics at their 2010 Dream Ride event in Farmington, CT. John M. DeCusati, CPA, ASA, CFE was quoted in "Staying Afloat: Settlements Offer One Way to Get Cash" in the New Haven Register on June 28, 2010. In May, Heather M. Young earned her Master of Science degree in Taxation from the University of New Haven, and Liz I. Tylawsky, JD earned her Master of Science degree in Accounting and Taxation from the University of Hartford. On May 12, 2010, Maureen S. Cosgrove, ASA was a speaker at the 33rd Annual ESOP Conference in Washington, DC. Maureen spoke on the topic on basic valuation concepts. On April 30, 2010, Kenneth J. Pia, Jr., CPA, ABV, ASA, CBA spoke at XPX Connecticut's breakfast meeting on "Sale of Stock in a Closely-Held Business to an "ESOP" (Employee Stock Ownership Plan): An Exit and Diversification Strategy for Business Owners" at The Hartford Club in Hartford, CT. Kenneth J. Pia, Jr., CPA, ABV, ASA, CBA was a guest on the Savvy Divorced Chicks Radio Show, hosted by Colleen Bushby, on March 15, 2010. The topic of the show was "Are You Protecting Yourself Financially?" Ken discussed important financial, tax, and accounting issues that divorced women should know. Kim, CFA, MBA made a presentation on the topic of Employee Stock Ownership Plans to a dozen lawyers at a prominent Hartford law firm. Joseph A. DeCusati, CPA, ASA, CFE and David J. Peer, AM, MBA authored "Surveying the Damages: Valuing Lost Profits and Loss of Business Presents Complexities," published in the Connecticut Law Tribune on February 22, 2010. Pia, Jr., CPA, ABV, ASA, CBA was a speaker in a webcast sponsored by the New York State Bar Association on “The Sale of Stock in a Closely Held Business to an ESOP.” Topics included the overall structure of a leveraged ESOP transaction, including the objectives in establishing an ESOP, the tax benefits available in an ESOP transaction, the financing aspects of an ESOP transaction, the special ESOP valuation requirements, and proper ESOP financial accounting treatment. Elizabeth I. Tylawsky has joined our firm as a valuation analyst. Kristine G. Noli, CPA was quoted in "Playing it Safe: Use Caution When Banking Online" in the New Haven Register on January 25, 2010.
